Giving Back

One of the most rewarding aspects of moving to Mexico is the abundance of free time many expats find themselves with. This extra time often translates into an opportunity to give back to the local community through the many volunteer opportunities available across the country.

In San Miguel de Allende, where I live, there are over 200 NGOs offering diverse ways to contribute. From the Rotary Club’s impactful projects to Caminos de Agua, which provides access to safe drinking water for underserved rural communities, the options are nearly limitless.

When I first moved to Mexico, I started a program at the San Miguel library where I taught English to underprivileged children. Though I had no previous teaching experience, I have always had a passion for working with kids and giving back, so I created my own curriculum and taught for two years.

Currently, I’m teaching in a remote, mountainous region of Oaxaca, in a small community with only nine homes and a population of 39. There are no stores or churches, just a small one-room schoolhouse.

If plugging into existing nonprofits doesn’t appeal to you, consider finding an opportunity that aligns with your skills and passions and create your own way of giving back.

Here’s a small list of volunteer opportunities:

 •  Techo Mexico: This organization focuses on providing housing solutions for those living in poverty across Latin America. Volunteers can participate in construction, fundraising, and outreach efforts.

•  Cemex-Techo Mexico: A joint initiative for building homes for families in need. Volunteers are involved in construction and community development projects.

•  Fundación Mexico Vivo: A nonprofit dedicated to environmental conservation, working on reforestation, protecting endangered species, and promoting sustainable agriculture.

•  Red Cross Mexico: The Mexican Red Cross offers various volunteer opportunities in medical care, disaster relief, and humanitarian services.

•  Animal Welfare Groups: There are numerous organizations, such as Casa de los Gatos and Playa Animal Rescue, where volunteers can help care for stray animals and assist with adoptions.

•  Environmental and Conservation Volunteering: If you're passionate about the environment, Mexico has many opportunities to volunteer with ecological projects, nature reserves, and sustainability initiatives.

Volunteering in Mexico is a fantastic way to contribute to social good while also enriching your own cultural experience. Whether you’re interested in teaching, working with animals, helping marginalized communities, or supporting environmental causes, there are countless opportunities to make a meaningful impact.
