Cost of Living in Mexico
The cost of living in Mexico is a topic frequently discussed, and for good reason. Costs can vary significantly depending on factors such as the region, the length of time you've lived here, your ability to find and negotiate favorable housing deals, and your personal lifestyle choices.
I reside in San Miguel de Allende, one of Mexico's more expensive areas, yet my monthly expenses total less than 1,500 USD (approximately 30,000 pesos), and I live comfortably on this amount.
That said, I know people in Mexico who spend considerably more or less, depending on their lifestyle and budget. Some live on under 1,000 USD per month, while others have a more lavish budget.
Housing Costs in Mexico
In Mexico, mortgages are uncommon, and most homeowners pay for their properties outright. Property taxes are minimal, especially compared to the U.S., and homeowners may also have small HOA fees.
For renters like myself, rental prices can vary widely based on location, property size, and neighborhood. Here's a breakdown of my monthly living expenses:
Monthly Expenses:
• Rent: Less than $500 USD
I live in a beautiful 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom home in a highly sought-after neighborhood in San Miguel de Allende. This low cost is possible because I negotiated a sublet arrangement for the 4 months a year I travel around Mexico. (As part of my services, I help others set up similar rental agreements.) For those without such arrangements, rental costs can be higher.
• House Cleaner: 100 USD
I employ a weekly house cleaner to maintain my home.
• Water: 30 USD
This includes all water usage for the house, as well as the 5-gallon containers used for drinking and cooking.
• Cell Phone: 15 USD
A basic mobile plan with sufficient data and calls.
• Internet/TV: 35 USD
High-speed internet and basic cable TV.
• Propane Gas: 40 USD
For cooking and heating.
• Electricity (CFE): 6 USD
The monthly electricity bill is typically low, especially in the cooler months.
• Food (including dining out): 600 USD
This covers groceries as well as dining at restaurants.
• Entertainment: $100 USD
This includes occasional activities such as movies, events, and outings.
As you can see, the cost of living in Mexico can be quite affordable, even in more expensive cities like San Miguel de Allende. While some people may spend more depending on their lifestyle choices, it’s possible to live comfortably on 1,500 USD or even less.
